Hawaiian Maker Takes Pineapple Ukes One Step Further, Summer NAMM 2016

You’ve heard of a pineapple-shaped ukulele, but the new Pineapple from Hawaiian Ukulele and Guitar, introduced at the Summer NAMM show in Nashville, is something else.

The bowl-shaped back is carved into from a single piece of golden acacia, with a top of spalted curly mango, ebony fretboard, with paua mother-of-pearl inlays. HUG’s Charley Yates says that the company produced six of these with Ferangeli Guitars, a luthier in Philippines.

They also showed off the all-koa ukuleles made by the store’s founder Robert Yates on the island of Hawaii.

HUG’s new Aumakua line pays tribute to one of the island’s regulars, the gecko, with a laser engraved mahogany uke. To keep prices in the $300 to $400 range, the ukes are engraved on Hawaii, but made overseas.
